Hanging out in Central Park

How do you all feel about a small group of 8th graders hanging out in Central Park on a Saturday afternoon without an adult? I would not have dreamed of allowing such a thing when she was younger (as in 6th grade), but now she is more self "sufficient." I'm OK with it so long as she stays in well populated areas, but I'm not sure if I'm not being smart.

We live uptown and used to be there constantly; I had actually suggested it as a fun place to hang out last spring but it was unappealing since it was so far away for my daughter's Clinton friends. The park is not the scary place it once was if you stay away from the very farthest northern reaches and are there in regular (read busy) daytime hours - most Saturday afternoons are pretty busy. Even the brambles is not so remote now. Does your daughter know the park or is she going with someone who does? What time of day? I also like to ask my daughter what the plan is - Sheeps Meadow, Great Lawn, Zoo? Alice in Wonderland? Poets Walk? I know that kids love to just take it as it comes (me too) but I really push for a general plan (and calls when deviating from it). Or calls every hour?
